WHY YOU’RE LOSING YOUR HAIR

When it comes to hair loss, a lot of theories abound as to the cause. There are plenty of reasons why you may be losing your locks. You may be overstressed or deficient in certain nutrients or, you may find out that implementing a couple of simple lifestyle changes may slow down or stop the process altogether. Here are a few of the factors known to induce hair loss as well as some easy fixes that you can apply today.
Losing Strands Due to Stress
Stress is a modern-day epidemic that affects so many of us on many levels. We often think of it being the cause of anxiety disorders and heart conditions but it’s also a major contributor to hair loss.
Whether there is one particular event that has triggered your hair loss or you’re living with chronic anxiety, stress is one of the major culprits. You could be experiencing a loss, death in the family or issues at work or a myriad of other situations.
The good new is, if you can find ways to bring your stress levels down, chances are you will see a noticeable decline in the amount of hair you lose.
There are many things you can do to help alleviate your stress, the key is trial and error to eventually find what works best for you. Some suggestions: practicing yoga and/or meditation, reading, taking a relaxing bath, listening to soothing music and even exercising (the release of endorphins plays a big role in decreasing stress levels).
Lacking Nutrients for Those Locks
A deficiency in certain nutrients, such as iron, could be causing your hair loss. While it’s recommended to have your doctor validate this via a simple blood test, there are some telltale signs that your hair loss may be linked to an iron deficiency. Some possible symptoms: weakness, fatigue, pale skin, cold extremities.
Thankfully, this is an easy situation to remedy. Try increasing your intake of beef, fish, green veggies, legumes and include some vitamin C sources such as strawberries and red and green peppers.
If you are unable to get enough iron through your diet, your doctor may suggest supplementation.
Your Medication May Be Making Your Mane Thin Out
Many types of medications are known to list hair loss as a possible side effect. Many of these medications are crucial to your wellbeing as they often are prescribed to treat an underlying cause such as hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, etc.… However, these medications affect your hormone balance and that can contribute to hair loss.
If your medication seems to be responsible for your hair loss, consult your doctor to see what alternatives may be right for you. You may also want to consider adding a biotin-rich supplement to your daily healthcare routine.
Hormones Wreak Havoc On Your Hair
As we briefly touched upon, hormonal changes that many women and even some men go through, could be a major culprit when it comes to hair loss. After pregnancy, many women notice that they lose more hair than usual. Same goes for women and men going through menopause and andropause (male menopause) respectively. Certain thyroid conditions can also cause a hormonal imbalance.
Some natural ways to balance your hormones include eating carrots which help rid your body of excess estrogen (in men and women alike). Walking outside is another great natural balancer as it reduces cortisol levels (stress hormone). Finally, get some rays as vitamin can help reduce estrogen levels. Don’t love the sun? You can add a vitamin D supplement to your daily routine.
Your Environment Could Be the Enemy
Heating and cooling systems, the sun, hair dryers, flat irons, can all be contributors to hair loss. These are all factors in our collective environment that are inevitably affecting us. However, there are some things we can do to help reduce their impact.
Heating and air conditioning actually dry out the air in our homes sapping our hair of any moisture. Make sure you use moisture-infusing shampoos, conditioners and finishing products that inject moisture back into your hair. Whenever possible, try air-drying your hair or using your hair dryer on the cool setting. Reduce your use of flat irons or at least lower temperature settings. When possible, wear a scarf or hat in direct sunlight.
Dealing with hair loss can be a discouraging, even, devastating ordeal, but it doesn’t have to be definitive. Implementing just a few of the tools mentioned above can have a positive, long-lasting effect on the health of your hair.
